Decarbonizing Our Operations

Our unique operating model known as The Virginia Model enables us to ensure our decarbonization strategy and goals remain aligned across all operations and throughout the organization.

We are transitioning to renewable energy sources across all port operations, reducing fuel emissions and investing in zero-emission technologies that will help us achieve our target of net-zero emissions by 2040.

We have made significant modernization investments that are instrumental to achieving our long-term decarbonization goals.

Our strategy focuses on protecting our local communities and environment through fundamental changes in how we operate. Our goals include a 65% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, using 100% clean fuel by 2024 and operating with 100% renewable energy by 2032.

The Port of Virginia is a critical global supply chain enabler. Our business is moving containers and cargo, and we do that in a sustainable, efficient way.

Our comprehensive strategy focuses on where we can make the most significant improvements in decarbonizing our operations. We recognize the importance of our role in industry and innovation, doing our part to reduce climate change and ensuring we protect life below the water and along our shorelines.
